ambulance to john muir medical center. >> and that highway patrol officer is critically wounded. suspected shooter killed in a shoot out on interstate 6 80. good evening i'm dan ashley. it was a terrible scene throughout today. let's get the latest on the story right away. lisa is live tonight at john muir medical center with the latest on highway patrol man condition. lisa? >> we are in fact learning more about the officer's condition. officials tell me that he is in critical condition and on life support at this hour. the officer family and friends have been coming by for the past self hours. spokesperson from the chp told us that they were escorting close family members to the hospital to be by the officer side. this chp still will not reless his name but we have learned that he has been with the chp for seven years. he spent the past 5 years working out of the contra costa county office martinez. he is the father of 4 and he is very

loved. >> great individual. super individual. man of faith and support encouragement to those around him and family members. just hearing the stories that i did tonight it goes along with just the kind of guy that i know. pishtion law enforcement agency we have seen a steady stream of officers in uniform. still the parking lot here at the medical center and told someone will stay with the officer through the night and he will never be alone. back here live now the chp spokesperson said the officer family is coming in from all over northern and southern california and they of course are having a very hard time with all of this. but they do want to say that they appreciate all the support that they have gotten from the public and from other officers tonight. live in walnut creek,

lisa, abc 7 news. >> okay lisa thank you. >> now this incident began with traffic stop on south bound interstate 6 80 at 8:20 this morning. see it on the map. investigation lasted all day long. closing the freeway for hours while officers used any means necessary including taking pictures from a fire crew ladder truck to document the evidence down on the roadway. as vick lee explains, there are still a lot of question about his what happened out there. more than 12 hours after the shooting. >> there are many unanswered questions one of them why was the officer car parked in front of the suspect jeep. normally they pull up behind cars they stop but the officer car did have one device that may help investigators answer some of these questions. >> we do have some dash cam video that we will analyze to see exactly had a happened. >>reporter: chp withholding the officer name but told reporters he's based in the contra costa county field office in martinez. >> he was taken to john muir

medical center by ambulance and he is said to be in critical condition at this time. >>reporter: shooting happened at about 8:20 this morning in alamo near the la verne road exit on south bound interstate 6 80. investigators say the exchange of gunfire occurred after the officer made a traffic stop on a jeep. second chp officer and another patrol car also on the scene. here's sheriff's spokesman jimmy lee. >> first officer did make contact with that driver and shortly there after the driver pulled out a gun and shot at that officer and then the second officer discharged his weapon. >>reporter: that second officer fatally wounded suspect. chp says a passing driver called 911 saying an officer needed help. chp units and emergency medical crew then rushed to the scene. here is a portion of the radio communication between chp dispatch and responding office officer. >> nobody else.

>> 10-4 description of the sub suspect or anything like that? >> negative. he just said officer down. i have been trying to call him no response. >>reporter: both the officer and suspect taken to john muir hospital. suspect died there. >> this was kind of tale end of the morning commute and there was a lot of traffic going south bound on 6 80 and as it happened there were a number of eyewitnesses who remaepd on scene. >>reporter: the highway was empty while investigators from numerous agencies the chp, sheriff's department and the district attorney's office gathered evidence and set autopsy crime lab under the blue tent canopy. at one point police were lacking for female driver of black nissan they thought perhaps another car was involved. but as it turned ou out, they were wrong. the suspect who died acted alone. vick lee, abc 7 news. well as you have heard here the investigation that this shoot out caused big traffic tie ups in the alamo walnut creek area all day long. people spent hours in their cars. corrina with what

drivers faced all day. >> should video from sky 7 hd gives you an idea of how bizarre the traffic disruption became on 6 80. big rig turned around in the middle of the freeway. and this on ramp to northbound 6 80 at die ab lo road became an off ramp. >> we had to because we sitting there for lick 2 hours. >>reporter: how weird coming off the ramp. >> weird. better than sitting there. >>reporter: freeway closure on both direction near la verne made the back to work commute a nature mayor that left thousands of people frazzle. >> i have been in traffic for 2 and a half hours and i'm like stressed out. this is my pit stop. almost ran out of gas on the way to work. >>reporter: danville a parking lot as drivers trying to good north got off on 6 more valley or die ab lo road exit and tried to make their way through downtown. trucker especially found themselves in a jam. >> not even supposed to be her here. this is like a no truck

zone but we are all taking a chance because there's nothing else we can do. >>reporter: many right now that was corrina reporting. stay with us for the very latest on the investigation into the chp officer shooting. we'll vup dates on our web site abc 7 news.com and of course on 7 news at 11:00 on channel 7. let's move on now. believe it or not there was a bad accident on 6 80 today as well. car fire had tires exploding. tl she also called 911 when she saw the whole thing happening at olympic boulevard downtown walnut creek around 10:15 this morning. driver had no idea his car was on fire. another driver jumped out and pulled him to safety. flames apparently directly underneath his seat. besides the tires the battery also exploded and car really badly burned up in the end as you can tell but everyone is okay. >> san jose firefighters who suffered a heart attack while

battling a church fire showing significant signs of improvement tonight very encouraging. department spokesperson tells us that frank ryan is awake now and talking with family and freb. he's still listed in critical condition in an intensive care unit but obviously this is naws lot of people have been waiting for. many of ryan co-workers have been by his side since he collapsed last thursday as crew put out a fire at saint patrick's cathedral. >> switch gear and talk politic. first nature of the dnc. first lady michelle obama finished speaking less than an hour ago and gave a heart felt speech explaining why america needs to port her husband she believes here's the highlight. >> i know from experience that if i trawl want to leave a better world for my daughters and for all of our sons and daughters, if we want to give all of our childrenal

>> we are just getting new information about this terrible tragedy on highway enter state 6 80 in the east bay that started at 8:20 this morning. you are looking at sky 7 pictures of what happened. highway patrol officer shot and critically wounded. the gunman who shot him was ultimately killed by authorities. now we have just heard the identity of this highway patrol man critically injured. his name is kenyon young strom, highway
